A little about this treasure.

A striking True Selenite slab weighing 209g, with beautiful glass-like transparency, natural internal veils and dramatic crystalline cleavage patterns running throughout the piece.

Unlike the fibrous Satin Spar commonly sold as “selenite”, this piece is genuine transparent Selenite, the clear crystalline variety of gypsum. Its natural structure creates incredible layers, reflections and almost window-like areas of clarity when held to the light.

This particular piece has been cut into a substantial display slab and is able to stand independently, making it especially beautiful displayed on a shelf, altar or within a mineral collection.

Geological Information

  • Mineral: Gypsum
  • Variety: Selenite
  • Composition: Calcium sulphate dihydrate (CaSO₄·2H₂O)
  • Hardness: 2 on the Mohs scale
  • Crystal System: Monoclinic
  • Appearance: Transparent to translucent with a vitreous to pearly lustre

Selenite forms when mineral-rich saline water evaporates, allowing gypsum crystals to develop. True Selenite can form remarkably clear, sheet-like crystals and has perfect cleavage, which creates the distinctive internal planes, lines and reflective surfaces visible throughout this specimen.
